Celebrating the life of
Julio Toraya
June 28, 1920 - September 25, 2011
Julio "Jules Sr." Toraya, beloved father, father-in-law, and grandfather passed away peacefully at the age of 91 on September 25, 2011 at his residence at Buckingham South.
Born on June 28, 1920 in Barre Vermont to Raymond and Matilda Toraya, Jules Sr. was raised in Bridgeport Connecticut.
Jules Sr. is predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Veronica, his parents and his siblings, Abelino Toraya, Louis Toraya and Augustina Zrelak.
Jules was a U. S. Army WWII veteran who served 3 years overseas in the European Theater in Iceland, England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany with the 1276 Engineer Combat Battalion – the Fighting Mojacks. Before his deployment overseas Jules married his wife Veronica Knapp on June 7, 1942.
After returning home from the war, Jules worked as an automobile mechanic and eventually owned and operated various car dealerships throughout Fairfield County Connecticut, including Bishop Avenue Garage, Barnum Auto Sales and T'nT Motors. He retired in 1974.
Jules and Veronica moved to Savannah in 1991 and they lived on Wylly Island where they enjoyed spending time with their grandchildren. He has been a resident at Buckingham South since June 2006. During the past 5 years, the staff of Buckingham South, together with Hospice Savannah homecare, lovingly cared for him. He became affectionately known as "Mr. Jules" and was loved by all the residents and staff for his broad smile, sense of humor and warm heart.
He is survived by his two sons and their wives, Dr. Jules and Sharon Toraya and David R. and Lucille Toraya both of Savannah; his grandchildren Erin Toraya, Jules Michael Toraya, David Thomas Toraya and Kimberly Altenhofen, along with his great grandchildren, Taylor and Joseph Altenhofen.
A graveside service will be held for both Jules and Veronica as she passed May 2010 on Friday September 30 at 11:30 am at the Catholic Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests that any remembrances be donated in Jules' name to Hospice Savannah PO Box 13190 Savannah GA 31416.

Jules, I am so sorry to hear of the recent loss of your dad. I regret that I never had the pleasure of knowing him, but from his obituary it was obvious that he was a wonderful man who enjoyed a long and useful life as well as being blessed with a close knit family. I lost my mother and dad at about the same age of your dad, about 15 years ago. I still greive their loss, because they have and will always represent in our minds the love and solidity of knowing they were there with their loving support whenever they were needed. I know that you will always miss them, but time and your cherished memories of them will help heal the sorrow you and your family must be feeling now. I pray God will hold you close in His arms, and let you feel His promised peace. Your colleague and friend, Harvey Morgan
